Fern B. Yocum
Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Co-Founder of Yocum Oil
On May 7th, 2011, the Yocum family and company lost the much loved Fern Yocum. For 91 years, Fern graced our lives and community with her spirit, compassion and love. Her life lives on through her husband, Paul, her two children, Paula Olson and Tony Yocum IV, her 9 grandchildren and her 18 great-grand children - as well as her many friends and employees at Yocum Oil.
In 1959, Paul and Fern Yocum - partners for life - became partners in business, co-founding Yocum Oil with the sole purpose of helping the little guys thrive in the face of big oil. Establishing a company built on heart and service, the intention of Paul and Fern Yocum was to build a company with a culture rooted in Midwestern family values. Her three grandsons, Tony V, Jon and Tim, have kept their grandparent's dream alive in the company that remains - both in name and soul - Yocum Oil.
One of Fern's living legacies is the Paul and Fern Yocum Scholarship Foundation, which was established by Paul and Fern in 1998 to assist qualified sons and daughters of Yocum Oil’s full-time employees to further their education beyond high school. Each year, scholarships are offered for full-time undergraduate study to an accredited two or four year college, university or vocational-technical college.
A strong supporter of education, Fern was also deeply committed to her family and church (Fern was a longtime member of Gethsemane Faith Community), and loved dogs, birds and flowers. In honor of her life of beauty, Yocum Oil will be giving carnations on Thursday, May 12th to customers at each of the 9 Yocum's Holdiay StationStores.
